Recently, I have been informally talking about holding a scholastic chess tournament in Lexington area before the school is out. Here is my proposal to the chess community: 1. Date: May 2 (Kentucky Derby) or May 9 2. Location: LTMS – ideal for small tournaments (<50?) – because the tournament is sponsored by LTMS Chess Club, we can use the facility at no charge. 3. Type of Tournament: K6, K7, K8, and K12 (high school) sections 4. Entry Fee: $10/player 5. Minimal number of trophies.
My idea for holding a grade level tournament was to make our middle and high school students play more tournament style games. I understand that by eliminating lower grades, we will have a lot less registered players. However, this will make the tournament very focused, easily manageable, and friendly. Obviously there will not be any teams and kids from the same school may end up playing each other.
Obviously this is my idea and I am willing to do anything to make it happen. I also understand that I need your comments, suggestions, and above all your help to pull this together. Specifically, I need someone to volunteer as TD.
If we quickly agree on date, tournament format, and TD, we can start advertising for this tournament as early as this Saturday at the state team tournament and on LTMS webpage -Naresh Shah
